Welcome to Southern Estonia!

In many countries – in Estonia, too – the capital is the most popular tourist destination. At the same time it’s true the most authentic experience of local culture can be obtained namely outside the capital. Even though Southern Estonia already is an explored country for tourists it still holds several paths not chosen and something new for every season.

The gate to Southern Estonia is Tartu – the ancient Hanseatic town and the ever-youthful university town enchanting visitors with varied cultural events as well as a pleasant coffee-house culture. In addition to our pride – the Estonian National Museum – Tartu holds more than 20 museums, among them the Toy Museum, the Beer Museum and the KGB cells. The AHHAA Science Centre is worthy of a town of education and youth. Right next to Tartu one finds the Agricultural Museum, the Flight Museum and the Ice Age Theme Park.

We have something for everyone’s taste. Any friends of the theatre and music are recommended to visit the ballet performances of the Vanemuine Theatre or some concerts in the exquisite hall of the Tartu University. Nature enthusiasts can experience special thrills at the nature reserves of Alam-Pedja and Emajõe Suursoo or on a barge trip on the Emajõgi. Simple vacationers are welcomed at spas, coffee houses and shopping centres. A sports enthusiast should arrange to visit Southern Estonia during a major event either in Tartu or in Otepää, our winter sports capital.

More than that, Southern Estonia is a culturally diverse region. Russian Old Believers live on the shore of Peipsi Lake, growing wonderfully good onions and offering their traditional fish dishes at a small village restaurant. In the south-eastern corner of Estonia the Seto have carefully preserved their ancient dialect, traditions, crafts, and folk songs. Old manors, some of them even called palaces, give the opportunity to study the Baltic German culture.

Many people from Tallinn have testified time moves differently in Southern Estonia. There’s more of time and space over here. „It’s our thin mountain air“, the Võro people joke (highest peak is 318 meters). The surest way to find out – come and experience it for yourselves.
